      Robert,

Sorry for our tardiness in answering your question. We discuss this extensively in the three part series on the thyroid.

Everyone needs iodine as it is just as essential to life as it has equally disappeared from medicine’s consciousness. The level of ignorance in medicine’s understanding of nutrition is staggering. I suppose the absence of any nutritional education in today’s medical schools has a lot to do with this virtual flood of degenerative diseases in America. The “drugs for everything, drugs for anything” approach to modern health care is leaving us all in a serious dead end street of malnutrition.

As for myself, I take 4 iodoral tablets in the morning upon awakening and another 4 before bed. That is way beyond what I recommend for daily maintenance levels as I am purposefully pushing the dosage to see if there is a limit. So far my skin is baby soft and a cyst that has been in my wrist (ganglion cyst) for a long time is dissolving.

I hope this helps. Again we are sorry for the delay in answering you.

  1. Lyn Shaffer says:

I learned so much! I have been diagnosed with Hashimotos and my endocrinologist told me to avoid Iodine because it will cause a goiter. In the best interest of my overall health, I realize I need to stop taking the Levothyroxine but I am very scared and confused about what to do.

    • forbiddendoctor says:

Lyn, We can’t really imagine an endocrinologist saying such a thing! As in the words of Dr. McBride, “That’s a nonsense!” Maybe you heard him/her wrong? Iodine is the very mineral you have to take to prevent and/or reduce a goiter, we have known that for decades and decades. In fact, our patients in their 80’s and 90’s talk about having a iodine pill on their desk’s every morning in elementary school – and as one 93 year old patient told Mary, “Of course we had an iodine pill every day, we would have gotten a goiter without it!”

We certainly don’t know your entire health history, nor do we diagnose, but for an endocrinologist to say something like that…you might do well to find a new doctor. And as far as the Levothyroxine, you do need to be careful going off that, as you could have symptoms of depression, exhaustion, and other hormonal upsets. For that, we would recommend you work with your (a different) endocrinologist. As you get healthier your thyroid should start producing T4 hormone all by itself and your dosage should be able to be lowered and eventually stopped. You didn’t say how long you’ve been on the Levothyroxine, as that will make a difference in how much your thyroid has atrophied. But you don’t want to just “stop” it. Talk with your doctor how to taper off.

And Lyn, you don’t have to be scared…your body will take very good care of you if you just give it food. It is your best friend and it is set to repair and restore, not degenerate. Change your diet to mostly – meat, eggs, fish and dairy – good, clean, grass-fed saturated fat, ie, eggs, raw and fermented dairy, hard cheese, butter, etc., and supplement with iodine and a good multivitamin such as Catalyn (has organ extracts) from Standard Process. Mary has put together a very wonderful supplementation protocol for the thyroid, in the order of importance, on podcast #1 Melting Breast Lumps, or our 3 part series on the thyroid, podcasts #26, #27, #28.

A little word about Hashimoto’s. As we are sure you know, this is an autoimmune attack against your thyroid gland. There are many suspected causes of an autoimmune disease, which disease was not even heard of prior to 1950. We suspect some of those factors to be, vaccinations, low-fat diets, synthetic fractionated vitamin supplementation, malnutrition brought on by over indulgence in processed foods, and several other environmental factors. In Hashimoto’s disease, your thyroid’s function is being altered by the autoimmune attack. The primary job of the thyroid is to manufacture an iodine centered hormone called thyroxin (T4). As such, your thyroid’s ability to produce thyroxin decreases, which only necessitates the need for an adequate supply of iodine. The 4 in T4 is actually the amount of Iodine molecules in the thyroxin hormone. Iodine is critical.

Please read the book: The Iodine Crisis, by Lynne Farrow. This will help to alleviate your “confusion” and will lead to a more educated decision on your part as to what to do. We are only offering an educational point of view. It is up to you to decide what you want to do. We are certainly not treating your Hashimoto’s. That is between you and your physician…but you might look around a little more.

Keep us informed how you are doing. Please.

      Dr. Jack and Mary
